Keyless check-in for hotels and B&Bs
From booking to QR code to open door — automatically, without a reception desk and without lost keys. Here's how keyless access works with the BOOQR Hub.
Why the key handover is the biggest bottleneck
Ask any B&B operator about their biggest frustration, and the key handover tops the list. Guests arrive late, after a traffic jam or a delayed flight, and still expect to get in. You don't want to plan your evening around a stranger's arrival time.
Physical keys also carry risk. They go missing, get copied or stay in a jacket pocket after checkout. Every lost key means replacing or re-coding a lock — costs and hassle you hadn't budgeted for.
The alternative, a staffed reception, is simply too expensive for most small accommodations. You pay someone to wait for guests who might only arrive at eleven at night. Keyless check-in removes this bottleneck entirely: the technology handles access, and you don't have to be ready for it.
How keyless check-in works
The flow is simple and fully automated. A guest books a room online for specific dates. They pay right away — with BOOQR via iDEAL. As soon as the payment comes in, the system automatically generates a personal access code.
That code reaches the guest as a QR code. On arrival they hold the code up to the reader or scan it, and the door opens. No key, no waiting, no reception. The guest walks straight to their room.
The engine behind this is the BOOQR Hub, and it's deliberately hardware-agnostic. Whether you use IP locks, have a Salto system installed or work with Shelly relays: the Hub drives them all. So you usually don't need to replace your existing infrastructure — a big difference from closed systems that lock you into one brand.
Security and control
Keyless doesn't mean less secure — on the contrary. Every access code is time-bound: it only works between the agreed arrival and departure dates. After the stay the code expires automatically, so a former guest can never get in later. A physical key can't do that.
In addition, the system records everything in an audit log. For each door opening you can see which code was used and at what moment. If there's ever doubt about who was where and when, you have a reliable, immutable overview. That brings peace of mind, especially with multiple rooms.
Codes are also personal and can't be copied like a key. If a guest loses their phone, you block the code and issue a new one — without physically touching the lock. Security that moves with reality, instead of a static bunch of keys.
What you need
The threshold to start is lower than many operators think. You need two things: the BOOQR Hub as the brain, and a compatible lock on the door. Because the Hub is hardware-agnostic, that lock is often already there — an IP lock, a Salto unit or a simple Shelly relay on an existing door opener.
The Hub connects your locks to the BOOQR platform. From that moment every booking automatically activates the right code for the right door and the right period. You set it up once, and after that it runs in the background, without you having to do anything per guest.
Want to know exactly which locks are supported and how the connection works? The access control page lays out the technology, including the options per lock type. That way you can assess in advance whether your current hardware is suitable.
Self-check-in as a guest experience
Keyless access isn't only practical for you — it's also a better experience for the guest. More and more travellers expect 24/7 arrival without waiting for a desk clerk. After a long journey they just want to get in, on their own time.
With self-check-in you give them exactly that. The guest receives their QR code and all the information they need in advance. On arrival they open the door themselves, whenever it suits them. No phone arrangements about arrival times, no awkward waiting in an empty lobby.
For you it means you can offer hospitality without being physically present. Your time goes to the things that really matter — a clean room, a good breakfast, a personal tip — instead of handing over keys. A win-win that sets the tone for the entire stay.
Ready to see it work?
Keyless check-in may sound futuristic, but in practice it's set up within a day and invisible afterwards — it just works. The combination of automatic codes, hardware independence and offline validation makes it robust enough for daily use.
The best way to judge whether it fits your accommodation is to see it yourself. Request a demo and we'll show the full flow: from booking to open door, including the audit log and the options with your existing locks.
